On July 8, 2019 the Internal Revenue Service approved Coastal Literary Arts Movement (Coastal Lit) as a tax-exempt organization, making its donors’ generous contributions, past and future, tax-deductible to the full extent allowed by law. Approval was expedited by the timely intervention of Raghda Karajah of Congresswoman Jackie Speier’s office.

Coastal Lit (also CLAM) was incorporated as a California nonprofit, public-benefit organization in May 2018, and has been taking steps since then to obtain federal tax-exempt status under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. CLAM’s 501(c)(3) registration and federal “EIN,” 83-0687962, allows us to solicit tax-exempt donations from foundations, companies, trusts, estates, other tax-exempt entities, and people who share its mission: promoting independent, bilingual journalism and literary appreciation in rural coastal communities. CLAM will join with local schools, literary organizations, and media to enliven the coast’s literary and journalistic life.
